Scotland: Foster care pledge given extra boost

The Scottish Executive has trumped its recent Budget pledge to provide more foster carers by vowing to increase allowances for carers across the board.

And it went one better than putting aside 12m for more carers and foster places, by increasing payments to those looking after young people aged over 15.

"Estimates of a shortage of 700 carers cannot be backed up," said a spokesman. "But we want to attract people and will distribute cash to authorities over two years from early 2005."

Bryan Ritchie, manager of The Fostering Network Scotland, welcomed the announcement made last week in parliament. He urged authorities to use the grant to bring allowances in line with the network's minimum allowances.

Meanwhile, the Executive is to pilot integrated inspection of child protection in the Highlands and East Dunbartonshire.
