Initial findings from a Fostering Network consultation on smoking byfoster carers that ended last week show carers are split on therestrictions, which come into force on 1 July.
Raina Sheridan, who wrote the consultation, told Children Now theresponses to the consultation had been "fascinating". "There's everykind of response that you can imagine, from 'foster carers should neverbe allowed to smoke' through to 'we're adults, we can make decisions forourselves and we're aware of the health risks to children'," shesaid.
The Fostering Network is currently collating all the responses to theconsultation, before drawing up final guidance to be issued prior to the1 July ban on smoking in enclosed public spaces. Sheridan said whenwriting the consultation document she had to bear in mind that fostercarers are in their own home, but that they are also providing a publicservice. But she added: "It's the duty of the provider to ensurechildren live in a smoke-free environment."
