1 min read Social Care
Devon has worked with Connexions to track every care leaver aged between 18 and 20.

Council: Devon

Performance: The percentage of former care leavers aged 19 who were in suitable accommodation in the year ending 31 March

2004 Devon 62.5% England average 79.6%

2005 Devon 84.9% England average 83.9%

2006 Devon 84.1% England average 87.9%

2007 Devon 84.2% England average 87.3%

2008 Devon 92.2% England average 88.4%

Ensuring care leavers move into suitable accommodation cannot be tackled in isolation, according to Ian Stewart-Watson, operations manager for care leavers in Devon.

He explains that stability for care leavers can only be achieved if the correct support is provided for young people as they move into adulthood.

In 2004, the authority was lagging behind the national average for ensuring its care leavers were living in suitable housing, with the figure at just 62.5 per cent. This leapt to 84.9 per cent in 2005 and to 92.2 per cent in 2008.
