Havering made the issue of housing a priority, ensuring that by 2008 all of its 19-year-old care leavers were in suitable accommodation.

2004 Havering 75% England average 79.6%

2005 Havering 73.9% England average 83.9%

2006 Havering 80% England average 87.9%

2007 Havering 92% England average 87.3%

2008 Havering 100% England average 88.4%

Young people leaving care face many challenges, not least the search for accommodation.

Havering council has acknowledged this and made the issue of housing a priority, ensuring that by 2008 all of its 19-year-old care leavers were in suitable accommodation.

The steady improvement has been largely down to the children's services department developing its links with housing in the borough, according to Eifion Price, head of children and young people's services at the council.
