How we are improving... Suitable accommodation in Thurrock

The appointment of a senior housing manager to the corporate parenting team and new procedures for risk assessments for properties have led to an impressive increase in the percentage of care leavers in suitable accommodation.

Until 2008, the proportion of care leavers in Thurrock deemed to be in suitable accommodation at the age of 19 was well below the national average.

Since then, major improvements have been made, pushing the percentage up to just below the national average in 2009. And for the year ending March 2010, all 15 care leavers aged 19 were classed as living in suitable accommodation.

Lorna Scarlett, strategic leader of corporate parenting at the council, says improvements in the housing service came after a decision was taken two years ago to appoint a senior housing manager to the corporate parenting team. Meanwhile, a dedicated housing support worker co-ordinates all housing activities.
