As one of the government's Right To Be Cared For pilot areas, Barnet has been working with its looked-after young people to ensure they do not leave the care system before they are ready.
By combining procedural changes and bolstering support services for looked-after teenagers, the council has seen a steady increase in the percentage of its care leavers securing suitable accommodation. Before the launch of the pilot in 2007, Barnet had around 72 per cent of 19-year-old former care leavers in appropriate accommodation. This has risen to 89.5 per cent this year.
