In 2004, Gloucestershire was among the 10 worst performing authorities for making sure child protection cases were reviewed within required timescales.

Since the council's star rating suffered, it has improved by nearly 20 per cent, achieving 100 per cent in this area for three years running.

In its annual performance assessment for children's services last year, Ofsted inspectors noted the council's "very good progress in the timeliness of reviews for looked-after children". The watchdog also said the council's performance in case reviews was better than the national average.
