Lewisham Council's safeguarding practices have been praised in a recent unannounced Ofsted inspection.

In the report that followed a spot check last month, inspectors say staff are well trained and have a range of development opportunities available to them, including sessions on learning from past serious case reviews.

Another area identified as a particular strength in Lewisham is the timeliness and quality of assessments, which inspectors say "engage children, young people and parents well and result in clear planning and provision of support".

Recent government statistics also show that Lewisham has been making strides in improving the timeliness of reviews into looked-after children cases. In 2006, 79.3 per cent of cases were reviewed in the required timescales and by 2009 this had risen to 91.7 per cent.
