Southend-on-Sea has ensured that 100 per cent of child protection case reviews are reviewed within required timescales.

Council: Southend-on-Sea

Performance: Child protection cases that were reviewed within required timescales in the year ending 31 March

2004 Southend-on-Sea 45% England average 95%

2005 Southend-on-Sea 83% England average 99%

2006 Southend-on-Sea 100% England average 99%

2007 Southend-on-Sea 100% England average 99%

2008 Southend-on-Sea 100% England average 99%

In 2004, Southend-on-Sea was falling significantly behind the national average for the time it took over child protection case reviews.

But within only two years, the authority ensured that 100 per cent of cases were reviewed within required timescales and it has maintained that record in each year since.

"This improvement sits in the context of significant improvements overall in our indicators for looked-after children," explains Sue Cook, head of children's specialist services. "As well as improving on quantitative indicators, the quality of service has improved at the same time."
