According to Trevor Willis, manager of Southend-on-Sea's leaving care team, significant improvement in outcomes for care leavers began when staff pledged to go the extra mile in embracing their role as corporate parents.

"The team has made a real commitment to always ask: 'Is this what we would want for our own children?'," he explains.

Willis says his team found the best way to ensure young people secure a place in education or employment is not to "force, coerce or even bribe", but instead get the young people to understand that the staff working with them care about their achievements and want to see them succeed.
