School transport: 34m London plan is not monitored

Transport for London has been criticised for failing to show the effect of a 34m scheme to change school travel habits.

London Mayor Ken Livingstone has said all schools must develop a schooltravel plan by the end of 2009 to help cut pollution and encourageexercise. But a survey for the London Assembly's Transport Committeefound there has been poor take-up among the capital's schools.

Transport for London say the plans have resulted in a 5.5 per centreduction in car journeys, but the investigation said the claim may havebeen "overstated and potentially misleading".

Labour assembly member John Biggs, who led the investigation, said: "Weundertook this investigation because of increasing concerns about theeffect of the school run on traffic congestion, pollution and children'shealth."
