Transport scheme cuts school run journeys in London

1 min read Education
The number of school run car journeys made in London has fallen by 3.3 million, according to new figures from Transport for London (TfL).

The department's travel plans initiative has enabled schools to cut the number of car journeys made by pupils by 6.4 per cent since 2005. Once travel plans are introduced to the rest of London's schools, TfL estimate there will be 6 million fewer car journeys made in the capital.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson expects all schools to have a travel plan in place by 2009. He said: "We have all experienced the congestion, safety and pollution problems associated with the school run, so it should be applauded that there is now increasingly successful work going on - with TfL working in partnership with schools and local communities - to tackle the issue."
