School travel: Scheme for cheap transport revealed

A cheap transport scheme announced by the Government earlier this week could spell the end of the school run.

The Department for Education and Skills has announced the creation of asubsidised travel scheme designed to help pupils from poorerneighbourhoods attend schools in wealthier areas. The scheme will beavailable in 20 pilot areas from September 2008.

Children will be asked to pay a maximum of 50p for the service whereaspoorer children will not have to pay at all.
