School transport services face chop as council budgets squeezed

1 min read Education
Around three-quarters of councils are cutting their school transport budgets, latest figures obtained by the Campaign for Better Transport have revealed.

The campaign received 81 responses from councils through the Freedom of Information Act, detailing their school transport budget plans.

This found that 72 per cent are making cuts and 51 per cent are either reviewing or cutting post-16 transport costs.

Of those that responded, 38 per cent are reviewing or cutting transport to faith schools.

Campaign for Better Transport bus campaigner Sophie Allain said: "School buses are vital to reduce congestion and pollution, especially at peak times. In some areas parents could have to walk almost three miles each way, twice a day, just to get their children to school.

"Parents able drive instead will add to traffic problems, but for quarter of households that do not have a car this will not be an option."
