Public transport: Narrow victory for free London travel

Free travel for London's children has narrowly escaped being abolished in a vote on the mayor's draft budget last Wednesday.

Eleven London Assembly members voted to scrap free bus and tram travelfor under-18s in full-time education and 13 voted to save it.

The assembly's nine Conservative members together with two independentsvoted against continuing the scheme. Conservatives said the scheme wastoo expensive and has led to more anti-social behaviour on buses.

But Mayor Ken Livingstone warned that those who voted to get rid of freetravel had not given up on the cuts.

"We should not take today's decision as the end of the attacks on thisscheme," he said.

A total of 385,000 children in London benefit from the scheme, which isworth up to 350 a year per child.
