What is it?

The Royal Wanstead Children's Foundation provides grants to disadvantaged children that allow them to attend independent and state-maintained boarding schools in England and Wales. The foundation has been involved in a Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) pilot providing free boarding school places for children at risk of being taken into care.

How much is on offer? Funding is specific to individual cases.

What will it fund? The foundation funds places at independent or state-maintained boarding schools for vulnerable children. In some cases, grants can be used to provide care in the school holidays.

Who can apply? Parents, carers and children's services professionals can all apply to the foundation on behalf of the child. The main criterion is a lack of parental care where no other care is available. This can include: death or permanent absence of one or both parents; chronic and enduring mental or physical ill health of a parent; sibling disability that could affect the care of the child; and abandonment or abuse.
