The challenge

Finding out what young people think of youth services can be difficult. Service managers rely on a variety of techniques including consultation, self-assessments and external inspections, but approaches vary from place to place. Also, according to Lenny Kinnear, chief executive of the Connexions North London Partnership, adult inspections can create tensions within organisations and the reports are often inaccessible.

Kinnear and his team wanted to create a consistent approach to service assessment that would complement adult-driven quality standards and involve young service users themselves.

The solution

The Connexions team began to work on a service assessment tool that would be carried out entirely by young people.
