The challenge
Like many councils across the UK, Dumfries and Galloway has reached out to young people by providing them with libraries, leisure and sport facilities and youth clubs. But the council's Youth Issues Unit was concerned it was not putting in place the right programmes and activities within centres to engage young people.
Irene Rodgers, youth issues worker at the council, says: "We were aware of some of the concerns that young people had. So we needed to find a way for young people's voices to be heard."
The solution
The council decided to go beyond its normal participation and consultation work and get young people to formally inspect its services. It recruited young people to inspect various youth facilities across Dumfries and Galloway, creating a scheme known as Inspector8.
