The challenge

Barking and Dagenham Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) wanted to raise awareness of substance misuse by young people among agencies that make up the borough's children's trust. The team had developed a screening and referral tool known as Dust that was designed for professionals who come into contact with young people and have concerns about their potential or actual drug use.

The tool was devised to help early intervention so that young people with complex needs could access services quickly. But it was not being used well in all services. Saleena Sreedharan, the DAAT young people's substance misuse commissioner, says: "It quickly came to light that practitioners' knowledge and understanding of substance misuse was inconsistent."
