THE CHALLENGE

Birmingham Youth Service has been using Youth Achievement Awards successfully for several years, but found they were not suitable for all purposes. It was seeing a high drop-out rate on some programmes and getting feedback from young people that it was "too much like school". Also it was not possible to accredit shorter projects.

The youth service wanted to accredit young people taking part in a sexual health education programme it was delivering with Birmingham's Teenage Pregnancy Unit. It looked at Asdan's Bronze award and its sex and relationships programme, but found both too involved for its purposes.
