Resources: Workplace - A new focus on young people

THE CHALLENGE

The Borders Production Unit (BPU), which is part of Scottish Borders Council's Community Learning and Development Department, aims to help young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET).

The goal is to boost the young people's confidence and self-esteem by developing their social and vocational skills. Often the young people in question have few qualifications and literacy and numeracy difficulties.

But the BPU had become concerned that it was moving away from its formatted approach to helping young people who were NEET and there was a danger that the organisation's aims could become distorted.

Allister Short, community learning and development officer at Scottish Borders Council, says there was a concern that BPU could potentially "lose sight" of what made it successful.
