The challenge

Youth workers in the London Borough of Camden wanted to reduce the number of teenage pregnancies.

Although the borough has the second lowest rate of under-18 conceptions in the capital, it has the highest percentage of conceptions leading to terminations and contains high-rate wards such as Haverstock, Kilburn, King's Cross and Regent's Park.

The solution

Youth workers recognised the need to target those most in need of attention within Camden.

Wendy Gaston, the teenage pregnancy co-ordinator, says: "We focused on young people in the care system who were socially excluded, had records of antisocial behaviour or committing crime. We also targeted young people in alternative education.
