Teenage Pregnancy: Government cracks down on hot spots

1 min read

The figures, released last week, show the under-16 conception rate is at its lowest for 11 years.

The rate decreased by 0.4 per cent between 2001 and 2002, from 7,903 pregnancies per 1,000 girls to 7,875. The rate for under-18s rose by 0.1 per cent.

A Department for Education and Skills spokeswoman said: "The plateauing of under-18 conceptions reveals the need to redouble our efforts in the areas that record persistently high teenage pregnancy rates. A 10 per cent reduction in rates in these hard-to-crack areas would contribute to a five per cent reduction in the national rate."

The Government's plans include training health, Connexions and Sure Start workers to help teenage mothers to avoid further unplanned pregnancies.
