The National Teenage Pregnancy Strategy was launched in 1999. Its firstaim is to halve the under-18 conception rate in England by 2010 and tobring about a decline in the rate of conceptions to under-16s. Thesecond aim is to increase teenage mothers' participation in education,training and work.
Health trusts and local authorities are required to meet the target by ajoint public service agreement. Each authority must appoint a teenagepregnancy co-ordinator to work with partners to implement local teenagepregnancy strategies.
Between 1998 and 2004 the conception rate fell by 11.1 per cent forunder-18s - missing the Government's interim target of 14 per cent.
SCOTLAND
The Scottish Executive is targeting girls under 16. It aims to reducethe pregnancy rate for 13- to 15-year-olds by a fifth by 2010 but doesnot have a specific target for older teenagers. However, reducingoverall teenage pregnancy is a key priority of the National SexualHealth Strategy launched in 2005.
