The challenge

About 18 per cent of Barnardo's 11,000 volunteers are aged 16 to 25. The charity is committed to increasing this as well as encouraging the giving of time by hard-to-reach groups, such as young people from minority communities and those with disabilities.

It wanted to ensure its volunteers more accurately reflected the diversity of its 110,000 beneficiaries. To do this, the charity's volunteer development department realised that it needed a fresh approach that challenged stereotypical ideas about volunteering.

David Booker, head of volunteer development, says: "Young people suspect that volunteering is just for middle-aged ladies with blue rinses. We wanted to illustrate how young people are volunteering to show that it is a win-win situation."
