The challenge

The Blackburn with Darwen Young Person's Sexual Health Board began to receive requests for help from member agencies about engaging young men on sexual health, relationship and emotional issues.

The agencies, which included the local council, the primary care trust and Connexions, realised that sexual health advice was not just about reducing teenage conceptions but also helping young people understand relationships and deal with emotional problems. But a failure to get young male clients to talk openly about these subjects was impairing the service they provided.

They realised young people, and young men in particular, were acutely aware when workers were embarrassed about broaching certain subjects. This perceived uneasiness was contributing to reluctance to seek advice.
