Sexual health: Attention all boys

6 mins read Health
A campaign to improve sexual health services for boys and young men will launch next month. Nancy Rowntree finds out what good services should look like.

Britain has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Europe. It is double that of Germany, triple that of France, and five times that of Holland, according to the Royal Institute of Public Health. The low numbers of boys and young men using sexual health services is a major contributory factor and it is here that sexual health service Brook is hoping to make a difference.

"It's no good producing flyers that rave on about how confidential provision is or how good counselling services are when what boys and young men need and want is free condoms," says chief executive Simon Blake. Research to be published by the charity at the end of the month shows that sexual health services aren't doing enough to tell boys and young men that free condoms are available, which Blake says is necessary to build confidence in the service.
