Blake and Brown convincingly demonstrate that our expectations about boys and young men determine how we act with them, the opportunities we offer them and the behaviours we encourage. This, they argue, has a damaging impact on their self-esteem, confidence, emotional development and sexual health.
By changing our beliefs and working in a more open and positive manner, the commentators maintain, we can support positive changes in the young person. In line with more recent policymakers and practitioners, Blake and Brown move away from the deficit model that states change should be for the benefit of others and instead they maintain that work with boys and young men should be about supporting their own emotional and social development.
