THE CHALLENGE
Two years ago, Connexions Greater Merseyside's senior management realised they needed to train managers to help them cope with the huge changes involved in the move to integrated children's services. But they also realised that an "off the shelf" qualification was not the answer. Instead, the training had to be designed specifically around the challenges facing their own organisation.
THE SOLUTION
The first step, in early 2005, was to hold focus groups with managers to decide what skills they would need.
Connexions Greater Merseyside's training and development manager Beryl Williams and her team used the findings as the basis for an accredited programme. They spent the next four months developing the course with the University of Chester, until the first programme started in May last year.
