Youth Matters highlights the investment of 80m, announced in last year's budget, for "learning agreements", which involve offering individual learning packages to 16- and 17-year-olds who are in work but receiving no accredited training. The success of the scheme, and of continuing efforts to get more young people into work, hinges on Connexions personal advisers engaging not just young people, but also employers. When the piloting started in 12 areas in April this year, Connexions Lancashire had to step up its efforts to equip its advisers with the skills they need to meet this challenge.

The solution

Connexions Lancashire offers a recruitment service for employers, with free advertising of vacancies across 18 Connexions centres, which are matched by advisers to a database of young people.
