1. Don't spend too much time on definitions. It saps energy and frustrates people. Since the 1970s, devotees of development education, as it was mysteriously called then, have tried to thrash out precisely what they mean by all the terms. While theory is useful and there are some interesting ideas, it is still better to concentrate on the practical aspect of the work. Otherwise you go nuts.

2. If you are helping young people become the adults they want to be, you need to help them understand the world they live in. That world is no longer - if it ever was - limited by national boundaries. Global forces affect their lives.
