1. People who give to charity are, mostly, amazingly trusting. Either that, or they are happy to give to clear their conscience, but don't want to know too much that might upset them. Buck the trend by encouraging healthy scepticism among young people. Find out exactly how different charities help the target group. After all, if young people are to choose the charity - and there is no decent argument against that - they need to be well informed.

2. Just doing a stunt and collecting for Children in Need is a wasted opportunity. The publicity for this year's event - on TV on Friday 17 November 2006 - says that money raised helps cover substance abuse, child prostitution, bullying, sexual abuse, HIV and other illnesses, homelessness, disability and self-harm. Now isn't that a slightly more interesting set of issues than a sickeningly cute bear logo?
