The Comic Relief fundraising event is popular with young people. But there is potentially more to it than just a day of madness for a good cause. Make the most of it, with the quick guide.

1. Why don't oysters give to charity? Because they are shellfish. It will get even worse, so you may as well abandon hope now and get up to speed with the basics. Red Nose Day itself is 11 March. This year's theme is Big Hair & Beyond ... Just Do Something. The organisers are urging people to change the way they look for a day to transform someone else's life forever. So expect more weird looks than usual.
