RESOURCES: Quick guide to... World Aids Day

2 mins read

Or explore the lives of teenagers here affected by the virus. Whatever, there's no better time to raise awareness and increase understanding.

1 Complacency is one of the biggest problems in the UK, says the National Aids Trust. Today's young people missed out on the Government advertising campaigns that raised awareness in the 1990s. Many youth workers didn't - and might wrongly assume that young people are as targeted with dramatic HIV messages as they were. They aren't. The trust says all the signs are that young people are not taking the risks of infection seriously.

2 The existence of good quality education materials doesn't mean that young people find it easy to access them. You need to create a climate where young people feel comfortable asking for information and saying what they don't know. This is not easy. Many young people simply wouldn't pick up a leaflet on HIV if they thought anyone else was looking. One information project puts leaflets on HIV and other sex education materials in the toilets. They are picked up faster there than the ones on open display. Go figure.
