1 Only the highly self-confident are naturally comfortable having their performance appraised by their boss. Sitting for an hour or more talking one-to-one about your job and how you can improve is a bit nerve-wracking.
The good news is that it gets easier with practice. Plus, it can be a genuine opportunity to become better at your job, which has pay-offs for you as well as young people.
2 Always go to a performance appraisal well prepared. This doesn't mean adopting a thick skin to face the barrage of fault finding. Just work through the appraisal framework and plan, honestly, your thoughts about your work performance and its strengths and weaknesses. Bounce your ideas off a trusted colleague. Know what you want to say, before going to the formal interview. If you try to wing it on the day you risk saying things you don't fully mean on the spur of the moment. You could agree things that you later regret. Bad choice.
