Project notes: Unity Youth Crew

1 min read

Goal: To increase mutual respect and understanding between different ethnic groups by uniting young people in joint activities

Funding: About 13,000 (including staffing costs) from Peterborough City Council

Peterborough City Council's Unity Youth Team set up the Unity Youth Crew project in April 2003 to tackle racial conflict among young people following the riots in Bradford, Oldham and Burnley in 2001, as well as gang conflict in Peterborough.

The project targets 16- to 19-year-old peer group leaders from each of the city's main ethnic groups - Asian, African-Caribbean and White - and equips them with youth work skills to promote interracial harmony among their peers.
