Multiculturalism: A sense of unity

Bringing feuding young people from different faiths together could easily end in disaster. But, as Tom de Castella discovers, one Peterborough Youth Service project is having some surprising results.

But now Shaahid, 17, and Ricki, 18, are friends thanks to the work of Peterborough Youth Service's Unity Youth Crew, an innovative project set up in 2002 to increase respect between young people from different ethnic backgrounds. Made up of eight 16- to 21-year-olds, the project tackles racial prejudice by celebrating what they all have in common as young people.

Meeting of minds

Shaahid and Ricki got involved after they were approached separately by youth worker Derrick Kabuubi following the collapse of the trial because of a lack of evidence. When they both heard that the other one would be there, they were alarmed, but both wanted to make changes to their lives.
