Aim: To give young people in the community a chance to lead
Funding: £4,500 a month from Lambeth Council's youth service

It would be hard to find a more challenging part of the capital for young people. The Brixton Road Youth Centre sits on Lambeth's border with Southwark - a territorial hotspot for gangs - in the notorious Myatts Field Estate, which has been wracked by high levels of poverty and antisocial behaviour. It used to be called the Vassal Youth Centre until it folded last year. But young people were not content to watch the only youth centre in the area close. Instead they decided that they would keep it running. With financial support from Lambeth's youth service, that is exactly what they have done.
