COO-L

Aim: To help disadvantaged young people engage in positive activities

Funding: Received £265,000 from Camden Council for this financial year

Hundreds of young people in Camden are benefiting from a scheme that gives them cash to spend on leisure activities.Choice and Opportunities On-Line (COO-L) provides young people aged 12 to 16 from disadvantaged groups with a monthly bursary that they can use to book activities of their choice.

The project evolved from a £1m government-funded Empowering Young People Pilot, which proved so successful that the council decided to continue funding up to March 2011. This year up to 1,200 young people will be eligible to claim £15 worth of credit in an online account. The council is hoping for at least a 70 per cent take-up.
