Jo Stephenson reports on a scheme where young people joined Ofsted inspectors in assessing services, a revamping of a skatepark, an anti-boredom activities website and a project to help young people most at risk of being homeless.

THE YOUNG INSPECTORS Name of project: The Young Inspectors

Aim: To engage young people in the children's services inspection process

Funding: South Central Connexions contributed staff time and £1,000 for a bursary, travel and other expenses, while Hampshire County Council gave £700 for a celebration

Inspections are always tough. But this spring, children's services in Hampshire faced a doubly stringent assessment as a group of young people joined Ofsted inspectors on visits.

The innovative Young Inspectors project was led by South Central Connexions, working closely with Hampshire County Council.

Connexions employed 24-year-old Ross Smith as a lead young inspector to oversee the scheme, while seven young volunteers were recruited through local youth services and groups, including young people with learning and physical disabilities.
