Case Studies: Project casebook

5 mins read
Jo Stephenson reports on a publishing project that aims to challenge negative stereotypes, a summer personal development programme for looked-after children, and schemes that use outdoor activities to help young people achieve further qualifications.

YOB

Name of project: YOB (Youth with Opinions to Broadcast)

Aim: To engage and communicate with young people in a rural county

Funding: Part of an annual £40,000 Young People's Innovation Grant from the Welsh Assembly

YOB is an example of a scheme that's had to evolve to ensure it really meets the needs of young people.

When Powys County Council was looking for a way to engage more young people across the deeply rural area, a website seemed the obvious answer.

Development of a fun, modern and interactive site was led by young people, who came up with the name YOB (Youth with Opinions to Broadcast) in a deliberate attempt to challenge negative stereotypes. Despite attracting more than 250,000 hits, it became clear it just wasn't working. Research showed that few young people were interested in logging on in their free time, and limited broadband coverage in the area added to the problem. So it was back to the drawing board.
