SPORT, LEISURE AND ACTIVITIES TEAM
Aim: To inspire young people to engage in sport and physical activity
Funding: Just under £100,000 from Sport England plus small grant funding from organisations including the Greenham Common Trust
Many young people in Berkshire are benefiting from a scheme that brings fun sports and activities to places near to where they live.
The Sport, Leisure and Activities Team (Splat) at Berkshire Association of Clubs for Young People (BACYP) has two vans filled with equipment ranging from traditional football, rugby and cricket gear to circus paraphernalia and scooter boards.
"Basically, we load up the van and take it out to community groups and youth clubs so young people have the opportunity to engage in sports and activities in an environment where they feel comfortable," explains Sarah O'Donnell, sports development officer. "That includes things they might not have tried before. Quite often when you say to young people, 'Do you like sport?', they say they don't. But then you bring out some dodgeballs and they'll spend the next hour playing dodgeball. It is helping them realise sport is not just about traditional team games but can be as weird and wonderful as you want it to be."
