COOLDOWN CREW

Name of project: Cooldown Crew

Aim: To engage and motivate at-risk young people using firefighters as positive role models Funding Came from local community safety partnerships and youth justice services. A week-long course costs about £2,000.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service is helping young people turn their lives around with a scheme that gives them a taste of what it's like to be a firefighter. Groups of about 10 girls and boys are taken out of school for a week of intensive training at a local fire station where they are treated very similarly to trainee firefighters, explains Steve Gourlay, the fire service's youth services manager.
