GREAT LEARNING CENTRE

Name of project: Great Learning Centre

Aim: To use young people's interest in sport to engage them in learning

Funding: £110,000 a year from the Playing for Success initiative and Leicestershire County Council, plus support from Leicestershire County Cricket Club

"It's great to come down here once a week," says 14-year-old Will Hough, a peer-study coach at the Great Learning Centre in Leicestershire.

The centre, which is based at Leicestershire County Cricket Club, offers after-school study support for Year 6 and 8 pupils from local primary and secondary schools.

Children are referred by teachers and follow a flexible curriculum aimed at boosting numeracy, literacy, computer skills and confidence.
