THE ALLOTMENT PROJECT
Name of project: The Allotment Project
Aim: To help young offenders change their behaviour and develop practical skills by growing their own produce
Funding: Up to £1,500 a year from Suffolk Youth Offending Service
It can be hard to get through to persistent young offenders, but an allotment project in Suffolk is helping young men turn their lives around.
The Allotment Project is part of Suffolk Youth Offending Service's intensive supervision and surveillance programme (ISSP) for repeat and serious offenders. It has been going for two years and is co-ordinated by ISSP practitioner Paul Grant.
The Ipswich-based project helps young men aged 13 to 17 gain practical skills in growing produce. They've had to get used to the discipline of getting up early to get to the plot and hard physical labour.
