Project notes: Letchworth Garden City

1 min read

Goals: To help young people from the town investigate its heritage and diversity

Funding: 25,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund's Young Roots programme, 5,000 from the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, and 3,000 from North Hertfordshire District Council

Nineteenth-century town planner Ebenezer Howard had a vision of well-planned, healthy cities for the employees of Victorian industrialisation. Letchworth, established in 1903, was the first attempt at creating one of these "garden cities".

This project, run by Groundwork Hertfordshire and local youth organisation Rap-Aid, invited local teenagers to investigate Letchworth Garden City's history and ethnic life.

Almost 70 young people aged between 13 and 18 took part in the scheme from April to November 2005. They were involved at all levels, including setting the agenda, deciding what to investigate and how they would present their findings.
