The issues most commonly associated with the term now start to come into play much younger. Exposure to drugs and crime in some areas is a part of everyday life, and children with poor self-esteem, lack of guidance, boundaries and parental supervision drift into both sooner. In an age when children can be permanently excluded from nursery schools, alienation from one's peers starts early.
The aim of Chance UK is to provide an early intervention, transforming relationship into the life of a child, to work with them before the behaviour becomes ingrained. We have encouraged the schools in which we work to identify behaviour patterns early and make referrals before the children are permanently excluded.
