THE DILEMMA

You teach a boy who is clearly autistic but whose parents refuse to acknowledge his condition. How do you help them admit he is autistic without alienating them further?

A primary school teacher tells how she addressed the problem with the support of her head teacher.

When a boy arrived in my class eight years ago he had already been excluded from a local private school. His parents did not tell the school.

There were already 32 other pupils in the class and the new boy was very disruptive, making it very difficult to include him.

It was obvious that something was wrong. He was violent, he talked to himself but not to the other children, and he would fly off the handle for no obvious reason.
