How do you mediate between a school and parents when the behaviour of an autistic child causes conflict? A trainer on a parenting programme tells how including a professional in discussions helped clear up the misunderstanding.

There was a five-year-old boy who came to us earlier this year who had a real Jekyll and Hyde character. He would throw huge tantrums at home, which was very stressful for his parents.

But at school he didn't misbehave. However, when the teacher would call out the names of the pupils for the class register, he refused - as they saw it - to say his name.
