THE DILEMMA

A teenager with previous convictions is kicked out of his home after hisparents find cannabis in his bedroom.

A youth offending team worker explains why she recommended the boy cutties with his parents.

I was involved in writing the pre-sentence reports of a young man underthe age of 18 who was having a bad time with his family. He had previousconvictions and the cases being dealt with involved public orderoffences. He wanted to turn his life around and hadn't been in troublesince the incidents, but when I first interviewed him he was goingthrough a very traumatic time with his family.

His parents had found cannabis in his bedroom and were so furious thatthey kicked him out onto the street. An older stepsister, who lived 25miles away, was happy to take him in but this created more tension. Theparents reacted angrily and threatened her with legal action unless shekicked him out. They even claimed she had effectively kidnapped him. These legal threats didn't make any sense and this was a terrible timefor him.
